The Role of Coin Production and its Acceptance in Shaping the Power Structure of Early Medieval Czech Society
Kratochvíl, Jan ; Štemberk, Jan (advisor) ; Charvát, Petr (referee) ; Květina, Petr (referee)
The Ph.D. theses Role of Coin Production and Acceptance in Shaping the Power Structure of Early Bohemian medieval society discusses the earliest historical payment instruments, which appearance is assumed to have occurred in Bohemia in the 10th century. It looks at them, however, through a non-economic prism, the establishment of which is preceded by a critique of existing interpretations. The subject of the research are Slavic payment clothes and the oldest denarii minted in the Bohemian Duchy. The thesis formulates a new hypothesis about the way in which Slavic clothes could have fulfilled certain functions that we nowadays identify with payment. This hypothesis is based on the assumption of a different organization of economic relations in early medieval society. On the basis of this assumed organisation of social relations, a social crisis is subsequently reconstructed, the reflection of which is identified in the St Wenceslas legends, for which a new source of inspiration, Livy's Ab urbe condita libri, is also revealed. The hypothesis about the functioning of Slavic payment clothes is thus subsequently linked with the sources into a broader interpretative whole. The coins are viewed in this work in a chartalist and practical metallist manner, in opposition to the theoretical metallist approach....
History of Central Europe as Joint Region in the Long 10th Century
Izdný, Jakub ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Matla, Marzena (referee) ; Sommer, Petr (referee)
The thesis deals with the development of Central Europe in the period of the long 10th Century, trying to describe in general the change of that region in the given epoque. The comparison and interpolation of the phenomena such as the Christianisation, the emergence of the political and economic power and the general transformation of the society aims to define a new view of the whole problem. The preferred vision is the economic and political development of the elites, separated from the existing socio-political formations and constructing its own apparatus of power, that will only slowly and eventually confront and merge the pre-stat formation in the form of an Early Medieval Christian state.
Image of raider in narrative sources of 9th and 10th century
Purchart, Ondřej ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Suchánek, Drahomír (referee)
in English language: This work pursuits the way in which the raiders harassing the Europe in 9th and 10th centuries were portrayed in contemporary narrative sources. By analysing the individual sources, the view of the authors of that time on Viking, Magyar and Arab raiders is gradually formed and then the view on the raiders as whole because the view of all those three groups is largely the same. This work emphasizes on the things the analysed sources say about them both explicitly and unconsciously but also on the things they don't say or don't want to say. Amongst these sources is represented almost every type of literal form, which described raiding of the invaders during those two centuries, from chronicles and annals, to biographies and letters Thanks to the extent of the operations of the raiding nations there are also sources from different geographical and cultural regions of Europe and the distinctions can be watched. The effort of most of the authors is an image of a barbaric, unchristian rapist with fondness in pillaging, killing breaking agreements etc. Moreover, they very often detract or not even mention their military successes. But other aspects, like great military prowess and endeavour for settling, are also evident form these texts. The image is therefore very complex and...
Žatec and north-western Bohemia in the 2nd Half of the 10 Century
Čech, Petr ; Sláma, Jiří (advisor) ; Macháček, Jiří (referee) ; Moždzioch, Slawomir (referee)
The present work was written following a master thesis on the settlement and the shape of the early mediaeval agglomeration of Žatec in the 9th century. Subject of this dissertation is the processing of pottery from settlement features and from the 10th -century fortification. This enabled to study the development of the fortification system and changes of the settlement structure within individual settlement components. On the basis of excavations a relative chronology of the pottery and in accordance with the dendrochronological data a hypothesis on absolute dating has been presented. In view of this new chronology a new quantitative and qualitative analysis of information on the early mediaeval strongholds and hill-top settlements of the 9th and 10th century in the central and lower Ohře Region and in the Ore Mountain foothills was undertaken. A processing of the research on Drahúš stronghold has contributed substantially to this new perspective. The 1960s opinion on the affiliation of early mediaeval strongholds on the territory in question to the tribal territory of the Lučans, which should have been opposed to the Central Bohemian Přemyslid patrimony, based on the gathered information and its analysis could have been rejected. It was possible to comprise the evaluation of the excavation at...
